FOOD DESTINATION: The Good Guys in Chile

By Jorge Jefferds May 11, 2019

As you arrive to the Santiago International Airport, you wonder how this country will surprise you. The view of the Andes can be fantastic if the sky is clear and pollution free or quite the opposite. With luck, you will have those magnificent mountains welcome you. If this is not your case, you might want to just take a taxi instead, and explore the second best choice to learn to know this beautiful country in the far South American corner.
Located on a traditional neighborhood in the old Santiago Downtown, “The Good Guys” (LosBuenos Muchachos as the Spanish brand name) welcomes all visitors with a different perspective in regards to Chilean cultural traditions).
The Restaurant Interiors
When they offer a table and the menu, the number one recommendation for a drink is the so-called Pisco Sour. Never leave Chile without tasting their most popular drink. A brandy fermented with grape juice and high-proof spirit, is mixed and blended with exotic fresh lemon juice to create the refreshing drink.
If you are not into sour flavors, they have a second famous drink called Vaina Cocktail. This beverage is made with ruby port, cognac, crème de cacao, egg yolk, and a touch of cinnamon.

Both beverages are the perfect start before you can order your main course. One of the most popular dishes in this restaurant and the one that Chileans enjoy when partying with friends and relatives is called “Parrillada.” They place in the center of your table a mini grill with a tremendous assortment of meats. You will find beef, “Chunchules” (beef small intestines served and prepared in the form of sausages), “Longaniza” (Spanish sausage that was introduced to most Latin American countries during the Colony), “Prietas” (blood sausages), and grilled skinless potatoes.

For dessert, go for a lucuma ice cream or cherimoya ice cream, or both if you want to taste these exotic fruits from the North of Chile. Lucuma’s flavor is a bit similar to caramel, but more intense and aromatic. The fruit is said to be natural from Peru, yet it has been produced in Chile for many decades as well. Cherimoya is a fruit with white skin and large dark seeds. Its fresh sweetness enriches it with the fame as one of the best ingredients for ice cream, cocktails and beverages of all kinds.

If you are tired after a long trip from North America (12 hours flight), Europe (15 hours flight), or Australia (20 hours flight), then you might consider a nap in your hotel and come to “The Good Guys” in the evening hours.
Almost every night, there are performances with the typical Chilean folk dances. From Easter Island to Chiloe Island, performers bring the most beautiful songs of this country in tunes of harps, guitars, castanets, and “Huasos” dancing the popular “Cueca” (the national folk dance of Chile).

Be aware that they might ask you to come and dance with them, but don’t be afraid. It will be an unforgettable experience.
If you don’t see the Andes Cordillera from the airport, start with the Chilean food, the second postcard of the Andean country.
